the Dead Celebration,” sponsored by MECHA, BSU & API Club
1. Gardena’s
Women’s Leadership Project, GSA & Peer Health Mentors joined in
collaboration on a World AIDS Day event featuring filmmaker Michelle Lynn C=
oons
and Reach L.A. In class
presentations focused on education and discussion of the specific health
challenges that black/Latino student’s face, and the disproportionate
numbers of black and Latino women with HIV/AIDS. Reach L.A.
discussed images and stereotypes of LGBT youth of color in the media and
networked with the campus GSA on an LGBT awareness event.
2. Youth
speaker Daniel Cacho presented to the WomenR=
17;s
Leadership Project and the BSU on using writing as an outlet for
self-expression and social justice.
3. MECHA,
BSU & API Club sponsored a lunch time performance of Aztec dancers from=
Mexico
City in commemoration of Day of the Dead. Students developed artwork and
commemorative narratives on friends and family they have lost and mounted t=
hem
on stage.
